Rose

The old fragrant garden rose, grown for its petals, its scent and its orange-red hips.
In the garden
Full sun, rich soil, good air flow. Prune in late winter and feed in spring. Choose old, scented types for petals.
In the kitchen
Use only unsprayed petals: in jam, syrup, rose water, Turkish delight and shortbread. Rose hips can be made into syrup.
Take care
- Use only roses that have not been sprayed with chemicals.
- Rose hips have fine irritating hairs inside; strain syrups through cloth.
