Lily of the valley

A low, shade-loving spring plant with two broad leaves and arching stems of tiny white bells with a sweet, strong perfume.
In the garden
Part to full shade and moist, humus-rich soil. It spreads by rhizomes into a dense carpet. Keep it out of reach of children and pets, and wear gloves when dividing it.
Take care
- Every part is poisonous, including the red berries and even the water in a vase.
- Can cause serious heart problems if eaten; it has been mistaken for wild garlic (ramsons), which is edible.
- Keep children and pets away.
