Fennel

A tall, feathery herb with yellow flower umbels and an aniseed scent, grown for its leaves, seeds and bulb.
In the garden
Full sun, deep well-drained soil. Plant it away from dill, which can cross with it, and give it room.
In the kitchen
Slice the bulb into salads, roast it, and chew the seeds after a rich meal; use the fronds like dill with fish.
Take care
- Food amounts are fine. Strong medicinal amounts are traditionally avoided in pregnancy.
- The concentrated oil is not for swallowing.
