Comfrey

A big, bristly perennial with deep roots, drooping bell flowers in purple, pink or cream, and leaves that make a rich garden feed.
In the garden
Sun to part shade, deep moist soil. Its roots go very deep and mine nutrients; cut the leaves, wilt them and add to the compost heap or soak them in water for a smelly plant food.
Take care
- Do not eat or drink comfrey in any form. It contains compounds that can seriously damage the liver.
- Do not use on broken skin or while pregnant or nursing.
- Treat as a garden plant, compost activator and bee plant only.
