Halloween around the world: a guide to the next four days
Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, and it opens a stretch of days that people in many parts of the world set aside to remember, to gather and to tell stories. Here is a short map of what is coming, so you can follow along day by day.
The next four days
- Friday, October 30 (today): this guide.
- Saturday, October 31: Halloween night, and the start of Samhain, the old Celtic festival it grew from.
- Sunday, November 1: All Saints' Day, and the day Samhain is traditionally said to end.
- Monday, November 2: All Souls' Day, and the second day of Día de los Muertos in Mexico and Latin America.
Why so many days?
Many of these traditions began long ago as a way of marking the turn of the year, when the harvest was finished and the dark half of the year began. Over centuries they met and mixed, which is why you will see candles, food and family stories in all of them.
Something to try on October 30
Pick one person you would like to remember this weekend and write their name on a small card. Keep it somewhere you will see it over the next few days.
Each of the next three days has its own short post, with something simple to try on that day. Witchonomics is free to start, and everything here is for fun and reflection, never advice or prediction.
