All Souls' Day and Día de los Muertos
Today brings two days of remembrance together: All Souls' Day in the Christian calendar, and the second day of Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, in Mexico and Latin America.
All Souls' Day
November 2 closes Allhallowtide. Where All Saints' Day is for the saints, All Souls' Day is for everyone else we have lost, and families often pray, light candles and visit cemeteries. In parts of Europe it is a quiet, gentle day.
Día de los Muertos
Día de los Muertos is a colorful time of remembrance kept on November 1 and 2. Families build an altar, called an ofrenda, at home, with photos of the people they are remembering, candles, flowers and their favorite foods and drinks. It is not a sad holiday. It is a way of saying that the people we love are still part of the family story, and it is meant to be warm, bright and full of memories.
Something to try on November 2
- Make a tiny altar on a shelf: one photo, one candle, one flower.
- Set out a food or drink that person loved.
- Tell a favorite story about them out loud, or write it down.
- Draw one tarot card and let it be a prompt for a memory, nothing more.
